Unpopular Opinion: Recognizing When it’s Time to Jump Ship

There is this myth in law school that your first job will be a perfect fit. While that may be true for some professionals, this is generally not the case. Many attorneys venture into an area of law only to find their passion elsewhere. Some attorneys gradually move from an associate position to an in-house position. Other attorneys fear being pigeon-holed into their practice, so they volunteer for a pro bono legal clinic or with an organization like Metro Volunteer Lawyers to find their next step.

The key here is to listen to yourself and honestly evaluate whether you are fulfilled by your education and experience in a given practice area. Remember, there are opportunities just on the other side of fear. Your career is your own and your clients deserve the best version of yourself, whether its defending someone in litigation or negotiating a contract.

Only you know what makes you happiest.
